There is a lot of information and misinformation out there. So, Peak Seekers has created this discussion thread to help you make sense of the CAT 2006 results. This thread will be constantly updated by Peak Seekers as more nuggets of information or analysis come to light. Feel free to post your scores or queries here.
For now, let me begin by sorting out a common confusion that people have: If 3000+ people made it through the criteria used by IIM A for admission, how come only 600 odd were actually called.
The explanation is rather simple. The criteria used by IIM A for giving a call was that a candidate should have scored at least 25% in each section and at least 33% in the overall score. 3000+ students made it through this criteria. But, for the actual calls IIM A did not call each and every student who made it through the bare minimum criteria (25% section, 33% overall scores). Instead, they had higher cutoffs for DI and Quant sections. 600 odd students made it through the higher cutoffs.
Please post all your queries re: the CAT 2006 results here.
Thanks

Hi,
I have burned the mid night oil and compiled a complete analysis of CAT scores and it looks something like this:
Set 111:
DI: Overall Score: 100, Cut-off: 45 marks
Verbal: Overall Score: 100, Cut-off: 25 marks
Quant: Overall Score: 92, Cut-off: 44 marks
Overall: Overall Score: 292, Cut-off: 120 marks
Set 222:
DI: Overall Score: 100, Cut-off: 45 marks
Verbal: Overall Score: 100, Cut-off: 25 marks
Quant: Overall Score: 96 Cut-off: 48 marks
Overall: Overall Score: 296, Cut-off: 120 marks
Set 333:
DI: Overall Score: 100, Cut-off: 45 marks
Verbal: Overall Score: 100, Cut-off: 25 marks
Quant: Overall Score: 92, Cut-off: 44 marks
Overall: Overall Score: 292, Cut-off: 120 marks
Set 444:
DI: Overall Score: 100, Cut-off: 45 marks
Verbal: Overall Score: 96, Cut-off: 25 marks
Quant: Overall Score: 96 Cut-off: 48 marks
Overall: Overall Score: 292, Cut-off: 120 marks
Now an interesting fact is that, except for the Verbal, the other three cut-off's match what was predicted by Peak Seekers earlier (which was considered very high by many)! Infact the actual IIM-A cut-off's are evn higher than what we had predicted. This means the others IIM's may actually match our cut off's!!
Also, remember that this year they have computed the percentage marks in each section as a percentage of the overall score possible in that section (and not the topper).
Now, the confusion about 3400 students satisfying the criteria but only 608 being given the final calls:
Aprroximately 3400 students secured 25% in each of the three sections and 33.33% overall.
However, IIM-A was clear enough to indicate this in the CAT brochure that this was only the minimum requirement (an not the acctual cut-off's).
The actual IIM-A cut-off's are to the tune to: 25% in Verbal and 50% each in Quant andf DI, while 40% Overall!
Going by this it is very clear, that IIM-A has decided not to compromise on quality of student even if it mean giving calls to less number of students!
So, 608 General category calls for 192 seats means a ratio of 1:3, which is supposed to be the best ratio in all the years.
This means if you have a second round call from IIM-A, the chances of getting the final call is very high!!

Manish sir

Here is another interesting tidbit, which assumes significance in analysing your performance. On your report card, you have sectional percentages and total percentage.
Sectional percentage means what it should mean in regular English: Your score as a percentage of the maximum marks in the section.
Example of the calculation of sectional percentage in CAT 2006
Assume the highest marks scorable in DI was 100. If you scored 90, you have a sectional percentage of 90 in DI. Seems obvious right? The reason this is important is that until last year, the sectional percentage was the calculated as a percentage of the toppers score in the section.
Example of how sectional percentages were calculated in earlier CATs
Assume the highest marks scorable in DI was 100. If you scored 90 and the DI topper scored 95, your sectional percentage in DI would be 95.8 (i.e. 90 x 95 / 100). Clearly this convulted method, relying on the score of one candidate (the sectional topper) was pretty lame. I am happy that that the IIMs have made the change to the new system.
So, what does this mean to you?
The primary repurcussion is that if we know the percentage / percentile of the sectional cut offs for a call, we are now in a position to calculate the exact score for the call. That is how Manish Sir has calculated the cut off scores for the IIM Ahmedabad call.
Note: On Nov 19, 2006, when we had posted our predictions of the IIM cutoffs, many had noted that our predictions were the highest. Some even gave us flak for our forecast. But, we are happy to note that our DI and Quant cutoff predictions are almost exact. And our overall cutoff prediction was also the most accurate of the ones available online. I would like to personally congratulate the dozen odd faculty members and section experts working at Peak Seekers for their success. These faculty members, courseware designers and other experts are the backbone of Peak Seekers.

Overall: Overall Score: 292, Cut-off: 120 marks
Hi Manish Sir, the IIM A cutoff of 120 is remarkably close to the Peak Seekers prediction of 123. You were one of the principal architects of the Peak Seekers forecast. Congratulations to you and the others who steered clear of the herd-mentality and considered all the new factors in creating the cut-off forecast. :)

Only 608 out of about 193000 students got a call from IIM Ahmedabad. We are happy to note that there are a bunch of Peak Seekers students in this list of 608. We have invited them to come and write about their success. Hopefully, we will see some of them here in the next few hours :)

Thanks Hitesh. That is helpful. Our IIMs who cannot make an error free paper, can also not set up servers to withstand traffic surges :D So, your list is great for those who are still trying to click the IIM K list just because the link was the first one that got publicized. :)
